Fotis Zisimopoulos: Out of Spartathlon 2025 – Focused on the World 24-Hour Championship

9/13/2025

After four consecutive victories at Spartathlon, Greece’s top ultrarunner Fotis Zisimopoulos has announced that he will not be at the starting line of this year’s historic race. The decision wasn’t easy, but just two weeks after Spartathlon (27–28 September 2025), he will represent Greece at the IAU 24-Hour World Championship in Albi, France, aiming to compete in peak condition.

He wrote on social media:

“Unfortunately, no Spartathlon for me this year...
I will represent Greece at the 24-hour World Championship in Albi, France, on 18/10/25.
My goal is to be in the best possible shape!
Good luck to everyone who will experience this legendary race.”

Looking Back at His Spartathlon Victories

Fotis Zisimopoulos has become one of the most iconic figures in Spartathlon’s modern history:

  • 2021 – Won on his debut with 21:57:36, the second-fastest time ever recorded.

  • 2022 – Dominated again with 21:00:50, closing in on Yiannis Kouros’ legendary record.

  • 2023 – Took victory in 19:55:02, breaking the record that had stood since 1984.

  • 2024 – Secured a fourth consecutive win with 20:18:43, solidifying his dominance.

These performances have established Zisimopoulos as one of the world’s leading ultrarunners. His absence this year will certainly be felt in the Spartathlon field, but all eyes are now on Albi, where he will seek to write another golden chapter in his career—this time on the world stage.
