Races Ultramarathon Inside Stadium
The Apollon West Attica Running Club (A.P.S. Apollon Dytikis Attikis) organizes its established biennial ultramarathon races held within the stadium at the National Stadium of Megara Olympians, in the historic city of Megara.
Historical Background
Stadium ultramarathon races were first introduced by A.P.S. Apollon West Attica in 2004, with the goal of promoting ultrarunning in Greece and providing athletes with the opportunity to test their endurance in a controlled environment.
Course and Checkpoints
The races take place inside the National Stadium of Megara Olympians, on a flat track with a special surface. Runners alternate directions every three hours — counter-clockwise for the first three hours, then clockwise for the next three, and so on. Electronic timing will be used to record athlete performances in real time.
Elevation Profile
The course is completely flat with no elevation changes, offering ideal conditions for achieving high performances.
Challenges and Difficulties
Despite the flat terrain, ultramarathon races demand great endurance, mental strength, and strategic energy management. The repetitive nature of the loop can be psychologically challenging for participants.
Special Features
Direction Change: Every 3 hours, runners change direction to avoid uneven strain on the body.
Support: Two large aid stations will be available with all necessary supplies and food, as well as medical services and a rescue team on standby.
Participation Criteria
Age: Participants must be over 18 years old.
Medical Clearance: A medical certificate from a cardiologist, general practitioner, or pulmonologist issued within the last year is required.
Minimum Participants: The 24-hour race will take place only if at least 15 athletes register.
