PRESS RELEASE – 9th “IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE HEROES” ROAD RACE

7/27/2026

Demophilus and Leonidas, the 700 heroic Thespians and the 300 immortal Spartans, would have been proud of everyone who took part in the race and once again followed in their own immortal footsteps.

They would have been proud because today’s runners were called upon to face the challenges of a demanding course, testing the limits of their endurance, mental strength, and determination. Every kilometre represented a personal triumph, strengthening the athletes’ spirit and resolve until the emotional moment of the finish, beside the monument dedicated to Commander Leonidas and his fellow warriors, as well as the memorial honouring the heroic Thespians.

Thus, the historic race “In the Footsteps of the Heroes” was successfully completed, with the weather proving to be a valuable ally. Conditions were ideal for all the runners and contributed significantly to a truly unique racing experience. This year’s event set a new record for total participation, confirming that the race has now become established as one of the most important ultramarathon events in the country.

Warm congratulations are due to all the men and women who tested their strength along the demanding 102-kilometre course, as well as to the athletes who participated in the accompanying 2 × 51 km and 4 × 25.5 km relay races.

Through their effort, perseverance, and competitive spirit, they honoured this historic route and the values it represents, demonstrating that the message of self-sacrifice, perseverance, and collective effort remains timeless.

We extend our special thanks and warmest congratulations to the Mayor of Aliartos–Thespies, Mr. Georgios Arapitsas.
