Without Volunteers, Races Wouldn't Take Place | Giannis Ioannou

10/2/2026

Dear friends,

It is well known that running races around the world can only take place thanks to volunteers. As a runner, I feel deeply indebted to these people, who give up their time—and perhaps spend their own money—to help races run smoothly.

Having spoken with them on many occasions, what stood out most was their selfless willingness to help. I also realised that most of them feel as though they are taking part in the race themselves, running with their souls rather than their legs.

They encourage the athletes and help them during their brief rest stops. Many go above and beyond, providing their own food and equipment: camping stoves for hot meals or drinks, sleeping bags, and more.

This inspired me to volunteer at some races myself. Unfortunately, I have little time to spare at present, but by making an extra effort, I have managed on a few occasions to enjoy races as a volunteer.

It truly is a different experience. I observe all the athletes’ reactions. I share their worries and their joys. I learn from my interactions with them.

When a race is taking place, especially a race lasting several days like the Authentic Pheidippides Run, I find it impossible to sleep. I believe everyone who loves ultradistance running feels much the same.

So, if I am not taking part as a runner, I try to take part as a volunteer.

Without volunteers, there would be no races.
